SPECTROSCOPY
Integrating sphere systems are used to
measure the reflectance properties of a wide range of materials,
including paint, fabric, plastic, metals, anti-reflection coatings,
reagent tablets, powder samples, geological samples, and biological
specimens.
Reflectance data may be reported spectrally, or in a single value such
as luminous reflectance. Various quantities may be derived from spectral
reflectance data, including absorbance, optical density, equivalent
albedo, and colorimetric quantities.
In a typical integrating-sphere application, a specimen is positioned at
a port in the sphere wall, and illuminated directionally by a beam of
light. The light reflected from the sample surface is collected by the
sphere, and, by means of multiple diffuse reflections, transfers a
representative portion of this flux to a detection system. The reading
obtained from this detection system for the specimen under test is then
compared to a similar reading obtained for a calibrated standard of
known reflectance.
The results of this comparison are then used to derive a measurement of
the reflectance of the unknown specimen. Select your application on the
